Jonathas deflects Costa comparison

Real Sociedad striker Jonathas doesn’t feel pressured when he is compared to Diego Costa, but doesn’t welcome the association either.

Jonathas has signed on at Anoeta on a five-year deal after leaving Elche following their relegation and spoke to the local edition of Radio Marca ahead of the new season.

“I’m very happy here. It’s only been two weeks but it seems like months,” he began.

“I can see people are excited. I’ve come to a club with an immense structure for working and I’m sure that I want to make the most of it.

“People ask me a lot about the season with Elche. They ask me about my goals too, but I’m used to it. I just want to do my best and work hard to make the fans happy.

“I like the project La Real offered me. It’s a club everyone knows, with a great structure and great workers. I’m very happy here. I want to work to grow as a player and a person.

“I was very surprised by the structure for working. I work hard to make the most of it. I’m a hard worker.

“I’m a person that is always eager to win on the pitch, for everything I have been through in my life. For me being on the pitch is a privilege. Off the pitch I’m quiet and I love being with my family.

“I don’t like to miss in training or in matches but I’ve learned you can’t always win. But you can always work to win. Sometimes I rush a little, but that’s normal.

“It doesn’t bother me [to be compared to Costa] because he’s a great player, but I don’t like comparisons. He has done great things in Spain and England. He’s a great player.

“It’s normal [there’s pressure to score goals]. I’m a striker. I will always work to try and score. At the end of the day, I’m an attacking player. The forwards always have to score, no matter if they play well or badly, to stand out it’s necessary to score.”
