Gundogan passes Barca medical?

Ilkay Gundogan has reportedly passed a medical ahead of a January transfer to Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund.

The midfielder was spotted in Munich last Monday amidst speculation that he met up with representatives from the Catalan giants, and Mundo Deportivo claims he visited the clinic of former Bayern Munich physio Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt to undergo a medical examination.

Barca have been faced with the difficult prospect of replacing Xavi Hernandez, who announced his move to Al Sadd on Thursday, but they are keen to ensure that Gundogan will not suffer a relapse of his previous back injury, which kept him sidelined for a year, if he is tasked to fill the void.

The 24-year-old announced in April that he would not be renewing his contract with Dortmund, meaning he can leave the club for nothing next summer, but the Germans will likely entertain bids for the player in the coming months.

La Blaugrana cannot bring Gundogan in until January 2016, but he would likely spend the second half of next season acclimatising to his new surroundings, akin to the case of Luis Suarez, who did not make his debut until October as a result of his four-month ban for biting.
