Castro calls on Sevilla fans

Sevilla President Jose Castro has called on fans to get behind the team in Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Fiorentina.

The Andalusians are looking to retain the trophy they won on penalties against Benfica last season and Castro is hoping they can make it a record fourth success in the competition.

“We’ve won the Europa League three times and a fourth would make us the all-time leaders,” Castro told the club’s official radio station.

“We are very close and therefore I want to encourage all Sevilla supporters, whether they are members or not, to come along to the Sanchez Pizjuan and make it a cauldron.

“It’s true we’ve had a very good season but we have to trust the squad to get through the tie, although it’s going to be difficult.

“We are up against very strong opposition but our fans are taking the initiative with flags, which I love, and as President I must congratulate whoever started it because I like seeing the stands full of them.

“This game must be given the support it deserves and Fiorentina made to feel as if they are playing against more than 11 players.”

Castro also praised the fans for the way in which they accepted the weekend home defeat to Real Madrid.

“The game developed how it did and we came very close to getting a draw from it. When a team gives their all the people appreciate that.

“Nobody wanted to leave without applauding players who had given everything and they’ll be doing the same on Thursday,” he insisted.
