Berizzo responds to Marseille links

Celta Vigo boss Eduardo Berizzo has poured scorn on reports that he could replace Marcelo Bielsa at Marseille this summer.

The former Argentina defender spent the first half of the 1999-00 campaign with the Ligue 1 giants and was Bielsa’s assistant when his countryman managed Chile between 2007 and 2010.

Berizzo was only appointed Celta Coach last year following the departure of Luis Enrique to Barcelona, however, and he has no intention of cutting his two-year contract short.

“I have a contract with Celta and my idea was to always see out my contract [which expires in 2016],” he said at a Press conference ahead of the Galicians’ trip to Eibar in La Liga on Sunday.

“There’s a termination clause in my contract if a national team wanted me, but that won’t happen.

“I am very happy here and have been during the bad times.

“I’ve read [about Marseille’s alleged interest] but nothing more. I was a player for Marseille and maybe that’s why the rumours have done the rounds.

“However, [this idea] has never existed in my head, neither will I ever terminate an existing contract in order to switch teams.

“I never imagined doing so as a player and neither do I now as a Coach.

“It will be a challenging and difficult task for everyone [to find a suitable replacement for Michael Krohn-Dehli, who will leave the club on a free transfer this summer].

“Celta have managed their resources well and today they’re a club who sell more than they need to buy. Hopefully, this remains the case.”
