Del Bosque: World Cup a disaster

Vicente Del Bosque has admitted Spain’s World Cup ‘was a disaster’ but insists the spirit in the camp was always positive.

The Coach added in an interview with El Pais and reported by AS that while he received positive messages from fans in the street, he is aware of criticism elsewhere and revealed he was stung by some of it.

“Some of the criticism hurt. Some colleagues called it a miserable defeat,” he lamented.

“It was a disaster, we played badly, but we weren’t miserable.

“An unbreathable atmosphere? We have a great group. There was some pouting because everyone wants to play, that’s inevitable, but things were minimal.

“I still don’t think I would change much. The line-up? It wasn’t much different from what the readers of a newspaper voted the day before, it was the same.

“It went wrong, it’s true, but I stress again: In sport, these things happen.

“If you go into details…you might think Diego Costa wasn’t 100% but I won’t focus, it would be unfair.

“I don’t want excuses but we didn’t connect with him, we weren’t as used to him as we should have been. But surely he wasn’t fully fit.

“Some people always want you to resign. Everyone was asking for my resignation and I couldn’t ignore that.”
