Toshack: Super Cup great for Wales

Former Real Madrid and Wales Coach John Toshack believes Tuesday’s European Super Cup is the biggest game ever played in the country.

Toshack, who has also been in charge of Real Sociedad and Macedonia, among others, and is now working in Morocco, has been interviewed by Marca about the Madrid-Sevilla fixture this week.

The game sees Gareth Bale return to his home town for the meeting of Champions League and Europa League holders and Toshack feels Wales has never hosted a game of this magnitude.

“I’m going to the state dinner. It’s my city, my country…I debuted with Cardiff City in the Second Division when I was 16, 49 years ago!” Toshack recalled.

“We’re a rugby country. For the city and the country it will be important. I don’t know how they’ve done it.

“It will be a very important day for us. It’s a final and it’s also Real Madrid with all their stars.

“It’s more for Gareth than for me. Bale will want it more than I do. To say that Madrid are favourites isn’t saying anything, but it won’t be easy.

“I know the Coach, Unai Emery. He debuted with me in 1992 at La Real. He had bad luck with injuries but he understood football and now it shows as a Coach. I think he’s done a fantastic job.”
