‘Del Bosque is Spain’s legacy’

RFEF President Angel Maria Villar has explained the decision to keep Vicente Del Bosque as Spain Coach despite the World Cup debacle.

Villar was speaking at a meeting of the Federation in which a range of topics were discussed before the League fixtures for the new season were drawn.

AS reports Villar as citing the example of World Cup winners Germany as reason to keep faith with a Coach despite a disappointing tournament.

“Neither the board nor the President ratified Del Bosque staying because there was nothing to ratify,” he began.

“Del Bosque is the legacy of Spanish football, the best ambassador we have.

“We came back [from Brazil] earlier than desired without having achieved success. It’s an irrefutable fact we can’t hide. We were going for the trophy.

“But it is very difficult to achieve. Only eight countries have managed it. Only Brazil won the World Cup twice in a row. There’s no reason for discouragement.

“We accept what happened and we accept it as athletes, because success doesn’t accompany us perennially. As we learned to succeed we learned to be defeated.

“I thank the Spanish clubs for putting at our disposal the best players.

“And also congratulations to Germany, who we beat in Vienna in the final of Euro 2008 and in the semi-final of the World Cup in South Africa.

“They also fell in the semi-finals of Euro 2012 against Italy, and they have kept faith with the Coach and the bulk of the team.”
