Senna on Suarez, Kroos & WC

Former Spain midfielder Marcos Senna believes Real Madrid and Barcelona have made good signings in Toni Kroos and Luis Suarez.

Senna also touched on the topic of the World Cup for both Brazil and Spain in an interview with Marca to mark his 38th birthday.

“We were all surprised by Spain. I argued they would at least reach the semi-finals, for all the players and the achievements we’ve seen,” he said.

“Criticism is normal for what has been put into this team. People didn’t expect the team to go out the World Cup the way they did.

“I also followed Brazil as my home country and it was hard to go out as they did, being hosts. But it’s different, as they reached the semi-finals.

“Neymar is badly needed in the Brazil team, but you also have to consider that they were without Thiago Silva in that game.

“Still, I think Germany would have won that tie anyway because they had a stronger team.”

Madrid have moved quickly to sign one of the World Cup winners, yesterday confirming the arrival of Kroos. Barca have meanwhile bought Suarez from Liverpool and Senna is happy to see both players in La Liga.

“Kroos is a great player. I have seen him for many years. He has great quality and I had the opportunity to play against him,” Senna continued.

“He is a sure star and will triumph in Madrid.

“As for Suarez, I feel sad that he has that harsh sanction but with the quality he has and the players around him I think he will triumph in Barcelona. He has great personality.”

Senna concluded by reflecting on his former club, Villarreal, admitting he wishes he could have won a trophy with the Yellow Submarine.

“Villarreal are used to causing surprises and they have done again. I’m happy because it is still my home,” he said.

“The club gave everything to me and I wish them well. Maybe I missed winning a trophy but it is a club that does things very well, cares about grassroots football and I am sure that sooner or later they will get a deserved trophy.”
