Blatter ‘surprised’ with Messi award

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has admitted that he was ‘surprised’ by Lionel Messi’s Golden Ball award at the World Cup.

The Argentina forward picked up the accolade for the best player at the tournament, despite some claiming that he wasn’t even the best player for the Albicelestes, let alone in the entire competition.

And the chief of the game’s governing body has conceded that he was shocked to hand the trophy over to the Barcelona man, and also commented on Luis Suarez.

“I was a little bit surprised when I saw Messi coming up as the best player in the competition,” he told a Press conference.

“Concerning the Suarez matter I feel for him that such a punishment hurts. But as the President of FIFA I have to accept the decision of the committee.

“This player will come back to football on the pitch and what he has shown on the pitch, we saw his tactical and technical capacity and his smell for goal.

“I hope he will be back. He is now at one of the greatest clubs in the world.”
