Valladolid and Osasuna relegated

Real Valladolid and Osasuna have joined Real Betis in next season’s Segunda Division after both teams were relegated this evening.

On the final La Liga matchday of the season, both teams knew they had to win and hope for other results to go their way in order to avoid the drop.

The Castile and Leon side faced direct rivals for demotion Granada knowing that victory would see them leapfrog their opponents. However, Stefan Mitrovic’s first half own goal ensured they succumbed to a 1-0 home loss to the Andalusians in a result that also saw the away side secure their survival.

Though Osasuna fulfilled their end of the bargain by beating Betis 2-1, Granada’s victory coupled with Almeria’s draw with Athletic Bilbao and Getafe’s win over Rayo Vallecano rendered the result redundant.

As well as events on the pitch, there was also an unfortunate incident in the stands at Sadar Stadium. After Oriol Riera gave the home side the lead in the 12th minute, several fans were injured after part of a railing collapsed during the celebrations and caused some supporters to fall onto the pitch.

The match was halted for 35 minutes, while all the other games involving relegation threatened sides were also delayed in order to ensure that they would all still end at the same time.

Valladolid’s two year stay in Spain’s top flight comes to an end, while Osasuna return to the second tier for the first time since 2000.
