Juan Carlos Garrido has insisted he will not resign from Real Betis but admits the club needs a huge turnaround to avoid the drop.
Betis were beaten 2-1 at home by Osasuna on Sunday, a Roberto Torres goal and an own goal from Jordi Figueras giving the visitors a two-goal lead.
Nono was sent off shortly before half-time with Osasuna a goal in front while the Pamplona club had goalkeeper Andreas Fernandez dismissed, but Ruben Castro missed the resulting penalty.
Jorge Molina Vidal pulled a goal back with 10 minutes to play but Betis couldn’t overturn the result and remain stranded at the bottom.
“The loss hurts in all aspects,” Garrido said at a post-match Press conference.
“Today has been a major step backwards. Winning was very important and, moreover, it is clear that the first half of the season has been very bad with very few points.
“To stay up there must be a radical change in all aspects. Everyone must improve, including me.”
Stressing he will not resign, Garrido added: “That would be an easy solution.
“The final decision is in the hands of the president.
“What we need to do is keep our chins up and improve things. But I don’t forget my responsibility.
“We need to analyse why we keep making childish mistakes – the goal in the second minute, the sending off of Nono.”
Praising the winning side, Garrido continued: “They are a well-formed team and are better than us.
“My ego isn’t so big I can’t say that or say they didn’t deserve to win.
“We must improve, with me at the helm.
“We have to change a lot and quickly strengthen the team.”
