Mel to miss out on WBA job

Pepe Mel looks set to miss out on the West Bromwich Albion job, with Malky Mackay now installed as the bookmakers’ favourite.

The former Real Betis boss has been in talks with the Premier League side after a vacancy became available following the sacking of Steve Clarke earlier this month.

However, after Mel insisted on bringing in his own backroom staff at the Hawthorns, it seems the Midlands club will now turn to Mackay.

The former centre-back was dismissed as manager of Cardiff on Friday, and was quickly made the firm favourite to take over with the Baggies.

Former Osasuna boss Jose Luis Mendilibar and ex-Liverpool defender Mauricio Pellegrino have been mentioned as possible candidates, as has Paul Clement, who is currently assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.
