Emery: Slovan only defended

Unai Emery praised his Sevilla side for their performance and admitted that their draw was only due to their opponents’ defensive mindset.

Los Nervionenses were held at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Thursday evening’s Europa League group stage clash with Slovan Liberec, as Diego Perotti’s first-half effort was cancelled out in the second by David Pavelka.

The result leaves Sevilla top of Group H, but a win would have guaranteed their progression to the knockout phase.

“The team played a good game. We have deserved the victory against an opponent who has done one thing well, which is to defend,” complained Emery afterwards.

“It was hard to find the routes through and complicated to score and whilst we did it, we needed to get a second. The draw has been a blow.

“We have looked for the goal, but in not winning the tie, the draw is good. We have played a complete match overall.

“We have had control of the ball near their goal, without granting many chances to them. To face a defence that is well populated is difficult, but we have looked for ways through and the negative aspects are to a much lesser extent.”
