‘Villarreal nothing like Mallorca’

Whilst Giovani dos Santos says Villarreal will only see their true level come mid-season, he believes that they are ‘totally different’ to Mallorca.

The Mexican international was a member of the Mallorca side that began last season brightly, only to trail off and, after a dismal run of form, find themselves relegated on the final day of the campaign.

Now at Villarreal and seeing the Yellow Submarine unbeaten four games into their return to La Liga, the 24-year-old is a little cautious, but optimistic.

“Always there should be caution at the start of a season. It happened in Mallorca,” recalled Giovani to reporters today.

“But this is totally different, I believe that we have the team to aspire to important things. Everything is going well having had a good preseason.

“But this is the start of the campaign and we must think game by game. Halfway through the League is when I think we will begin to realise what we can dream of, but now we are going slowly.”

The former Barcelona youth reflected on how the club’s ethos off the pitch is helping matters on it.

“As a group we are getting stronger. I have been here for a small amount of time and I have noticed that what counts is this place is like a family.

“There is a good atmosphere among the players, many of whom were already working with the Coach at the club, so we are a good group, making for a good relationship on the field.

“We are a dynamic team that like to pressure opponents. We have intensity on the field, we run a lot and physically we are better in games than our opponents. It means that we work well.

“Me personally? I came here with the ambition of contributing to the team and I am doing that, so I feel happy and calm. Without a doubt I have never felt so well both physically and personally.”
