‘Messi contract not shaped by others’

Toni Freixa has said that Barcelona’s contract plans with Lionel Messi will not be affected by the deal Cristiano Ronaldo has signed with Real Madrid.

AS have today suggested that, prompted by Ronaldo’s new deal signed with Madrid, Messi is keen to renegotiate his package, which is currently worth €12.5m a year, €8.5m less than his rival.

However, when prompted at a Press conference today, the Catalans’ spokesman has made clear that Madrid’s dealings won’t affect their own.

“We do not make our decisions based on what others do,” Freixa told reporters today.

“The club is improving the situation of the players, but again, what others are doing should not serve as a starting point.”

Recent reports have also suggested that talks over a new deal with Andres Iniesta have stalled.

“There is no problem, he is a highly valued and essential player. We want a set-up that the player deserves, we understand that he is below Messi and therefore we are convinced that there will be no issues and that this will end well.

“We will not go into detail on pay scales. If it were not for Messi, Iniesta would be the best player in the world.”
