Muniain: Effort most important

Iker Muniain was most impressed with Spain Under-21s’ effort put into their strong start to European Championship qualification.

La Rojita followed up Thursday’s 6-2 win in Austria with a 4-0 blitz at home to Albania on Monday night, as qualification for the 2015 edition of the tournament in Czech Republic began.

“We have begun this qualifying campaign well, winning on both occasions, but the important thing is that the team has done a good job,” reflected the new team captain Muniain post-match.

The Athletic Bilbao man netted Spain’s opening two goals either side of the half-time break, before Alvaro Morata and Jese Rodriguez scored one each.

“And it is important that those of us who play, do so always giving 100 per cent.

“Personally, I am happy to have scored twice, but the important thing is the team.

“The captaincy? Here, we are all leaders. It is true that I have been playing longer than the rest and I’m the captain, but we are all leaders.

“The senior squad? In La Seleccion there are great players and we have to be prepared for when we are needed by Vicente. The team’s future is secured.”
