Emery expected stronger opponent

Unai Emery surmised Sevilla still have room to improve even after a 5-0 win, against an opponent he suggested was weaker than expected.

Los Nervionenses ran out comfortable 5-0 winners in Poland on Thursday evening against Slask Wroclaw for an aggregate 9-1 win in the Europa League Play-off round.

Goals from Ivan Rakitic, Jairo Samperio, Diego Perotti and two from Carlos Bacca ensured the team’s safe passage through to the group stage draw later today.

“Slask had created us problems in the first leg and had attacking capability. Eventually we finished that game 4-1 up, but it was a better result than the performance,” reminded Emery post-match.

“Here, perhaps their absences undermined them, as we have done more than we thought we could.

“We have to continue on our way, give steps to progress and allow all of our players time to compete, now we are in three competitions and we are prepared.

“It is a big result but it should not detract from the opponent, even as Slask were not at the level we had anticipated.

“For us, there are things to improve, such as keeping possession and clear chances in attack that we have not taken advantage of, but in the second half we took advantage of possession.

“Our work has culminated in reaching the Europa League, which is satisfying despite the adversity.

“Now we focus on Sunday with a major game to continue our work in the competition that is most important to us. To be where we want to be and to deserve it, we have to be at our best.”
