JIM: Survival first, then we’ll see

Juan Ignacio Martinez has outlined that his directive at new club Real Valladolid is to achieve League survival first.

The Castilian outfit, who are preparing for their second term back in La Liga, today announced the former Levante Coach as their new tactician.

Appointing the 48-year-old on a two-year contract with the option in place for a third, the club presented him to the media soon after.

“The President has highlighted the objective of the club. One of the things required is to achieve survival,” Martinez reflected at his unveiling.

“Hopefully we can dream of adding further points and then of other things, but we cannot deceive ourselves. To stay in the League, which is as competitive as the Spanish one is, would be a success.

“The technical staff are making an effort and I think that this will translate into a very competitive team for this League.

“We will have to make the Zorrilla a fortress and pick up the points. If we can move forward in the table then we can look to other things, but the main thing is to consolidate the foundations of the club with survival.

“Before Valladolid, another team had contacted me. My word is worth more than anything else.

“I did not want to sit down with Valladolid and then sign with another club, but when that deal did not come through, then we started talking.
