Dates split Martino and Real

Newell’s Old Boys Coach Gerardo Martino has reportedly turned down Real Sociedad’s advances this summer to replace Philippe Montanier.

La Real were described earlier this week as in advanced talks with the Argentine to come in and replace their Frenchman, who has returned to Ligue 1 this summer.

However, reports in Spain have it that Martino has declined the San Sebastian side’s approach due to a disagreement on dates.

Martino is currently in the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores and has indicated that he will not leave Newell’s until at least their participation in this year’s tournament is over.

This ties the Coach to the club until potentially July 25, just as Real Sociedad’s sporting director Loren has been pushing for Martino to start at Anoeta on July 1, when preseason in Spain officially begins.

Talks had advanced to the stage of negotiating salary and contract length, but are now understood to have stalled on this particular point to such an extent that Real are looking to other options.

Martino has also been linked with Malaga this summer.
