‘Valladolid did relax, but…’

Miroslav Djukic conceded that Real Valladolid relaxed before the season was ended, having already achieved League status for another year.

The Castilians confirmed their League status in Week 35 and since ended the season with three successive defeats, including a last day 4-2 defeat to Mallorca, which wasn’t enough for the Islanders to be avoid relegation themselves.

“We have not been strong in defence and to concede four goals, you cannot be happy with the team’s defensive work,” concluded Djukic post-match.

“Following that we have fought and struggled and I prefer the rest of the season, we’ve done very well and achieved our target in an extraordinary season, so I congratulate the boys.

“We wanted to avoid at all costs getting to the last day of the season still needing points, because we knew that it would be very difficult to play with that pressure so we worked hard much earlier, whilst in the following games [after achieving survival] we have not been ourselves.

“The team has been distracted a little, but we are human. It is normal having reached our target. When the team relaxes, it is difficult to get into a good dynamic.

“But, the picture from the team is that of an extraordinary season.”
