Montanier: A historic season

Philippe Montanier has taken delight in becoming the first Coach in 10 years to take Real Sociedad to the Champions League.

La Real secured fourth in La Liga and with it a place in the qualifying round of the competition thanks to a last day 1-0 win at Deportivo.

Simultaneously being enough to send Depor into the Segunda Division as other results conspired against the Galiciains, the result pushed La Real up into fourth courtesy of Valencia’s 4-3 defeat at Sevilla.

“We are very happy, very satisfied,” Montanier reflected to reporters afterwards.

“Delighted, because it is the second time in recent history that La Real will be in the Champions League. With a French Coach, as it was with Raynald Denoueix.

“This was a very difficult match, especially in the second half, for the quality of Deportivo, who gave it everything.

“Depor must remain positive, I know this is not an easy situation for them.

“I’m happy for Real and the players deserve this League position. This is a historic season, my feeling is one of happiness, for me and for all the people of La Real. The support of our fans in the last month was important to achieve this feat.

“This is football, I’m so happy for the players and Real Sociedad that my feeling is more than happiness. Next year a small part of me will be with them, I’ll be happy to see them in the Champions League.

“Depor did not deserve to lose the game, especially in the second half. At first we were closer to going 2-0 up, but here it is not easy, especially in the context.
