‘Survival impossible for Depor if…’

Dani Aranzubia has made clear that Deportivo need to pick up good results in their next two games, or concede defeat in the fight against relegation.

The Galicians have spent a majority of the season in the bottom three and, on to their third Coach, still sit bottom, now six points clear of safety.

For goalkeeper Aranzubia, Week 28’s derby win over 19th placed Celta Vigo must now be followed up by similar results in upcoming games this weekend at 18th placed Mallorca and next at home to 17th placed Real Zaragoza.

“Right now we are off the hook, whilst if we pick up two good results, we will be encouraged, and whilst we would to be in a difficult situation, we would reach the final stretch of the season with chances,” the 33-year-old commented to reporters this week.

“On the contrary, if we fail to get results in these two games, it would be impossible.

“Having these games against these opponents and in them going on to face Barcelona and Real Madrid can enable us, if we get good results, to pull back into the fight.

“I have previously said that survival would be a feat and I still believe that. I said before the derby that a result would change the mood and it has.

“Following the win against Celta, everything looks different. Although we are aware that the situation remains very difficult, we face this match [against Mallorca] with more enthusiasm, knowing that it will have much significance, as we will not have many more options.”
