‘I left Germany to win, but…’

Ivan Rakitic has admitted that Sevilla’s current situation is not what he signed up for, but he is determined to return the team to Europe.

The Andalucians are struggling in mid-table this season and are only an outside bet to achieve their season objective of qualifying for Europe.

“We reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals this season and with a bit of luck we could have gotten to the final,” reflected Rakitic in considering the situation today.

“It is true that I came here from Germany to win trophies and to play in Europe, but I understand that the situation is not so easy. But I believe in this team, I feel good and am not thinking of anything else.

“We want to move forward, we can and we will work to get into Europe for next year.

“Not just for the club, but because it is what we want. We want to be in Europe with Sevilla.”

Rakitic is rumoured to be one of the players the club will sell in the summer to help finance a substantial debt.

“I feel very good here, although I understand the situation is that the club needs to sell. But the future that we have is to talk about the games we have remaining this season.

“Then we will see what is decided by President [Jose Maria del Nido]. The shirt of Sevilla is a sense of pride and people who know me know that I am very happy here.”
