Mel dreams of Europe with Betis

Pepe Mel has reflected that his frustration at missing out on European football with Real Betis as a player is driving him to reach it as their Coach.

Mel, who spent four years with Betis from 1989 to 1993 as a striker, sees his side currently sitting two points away from the final European qualification spot.

“For me it is a frustration. What I always wanted to be was a good footballer,” began the tactician in an interview with Betis’ official website today to mark his 50th birthday.

“I had good years at Betis. For my qualities or because I was with a Betis that were not very powerful, I could not taste Europe as I had wanted.

“I would liked to have played more in it as a footballer. It is the player who has the fun. Since I could not do so, my dream now is to play in Europe with Betis as their Coach.”
