Simeone: The final? Not yet

Diego Simeone has refused to look beyond Atletico Madrid’s upcoming fixtures, when quizzed about the chance of Copa del Rey glory this season.

Atleti comfortably booked their place in the semi-finals of the knockout competition with a 1-1 draw away to Real Betis securing a 3-1 aggregate quarter-final win.

“We are living in the reality of facing Athletic Bilbao this weekend. They are a tough opponent and soon we will have the first semi-final in the Cup to deal with and then we’ll see,” commented Simeone when pushed to look to a potential final against Real Madrid or Barcelona.

“Gradually we will see. The Cup has become accustomed to us for providing exciting games.

“The team worked well against Betis, they stopped Benat well and had no trouble during the chances at goal Betis created.

“Our goal settled us and in the second half we were waiting for that final whistle to go.”

Simeone’s side now face Sevilla in the semi-finals.

“Facing Sevilla in the semi-final makes me happy because I left many friends there. They will be a different opponent to that which we face in the League.

“With a different Coach too. Their position in the League does not reflect their reality. I can only say that I have great affection for the people of Sevilla, but I want Atletico to win.”
