Alonso: Madrid didn’t suffer

Xabi Alonso commented that Real Madrid were not made to suffer at Valencia last night, despite being reduced to 10 men and then nine.

Los Merengues had Fabio Coentrao dismissed early in to the second half of this Copa del Rey clash for a second yellow, before Angel Di Maria followed him down the tunnel approaching the 90-minute mark.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Alonso believes that Madrid were comfortable in securing the 1-1 result, 3-1 aggregate scoreline and passage through to the semi-finals.

“We had a good advantage from the first leg last week, and after the first goal things turned around for us,” reflected the midfielder.

“In the second half, we didn’t suffer, in spite of the expulsion. We’ve played an intelligent game.

“We have a lot of potential on attack and a good, solid defence is fundamental for getting ahead, winning games, and having a positive dynamic.

“The red cards are what they are, whilst we hope what happened to Casillas isn’t too bad.”
