‘Madrid are not aggressive’

Assistant Coach Aitor Karanka defended Real Madrid’s recent disciplinary record, after they were reduced to nine men on Wednesday.

Madrid recorded a 1-1 draw at Mestalla to secure a 3-1 aggregate win in their Copa del Rey quarter-final with Valencia.

However, both Fabio Coentrao and Angel Di Maria were sent off in the 90 minutes.

“The images are there to see. We were left with nine men. It was surprising. Not just with Di Maria but Coentrao also. We’ve lost two players without being aggressive in the game,” defended Karanka post-match, once more talking in Jose Mourinho’s place.

“Four red cards this month? You have to see them and draw your conclusions. We do not have aggressive players.

“Our aim was to qualify and we have done so. Valencia have improved considerably since the arrival of Ernesto Valverde.”

Madrid lost Iker Casillas to injury, whilst replacement Antonio Adan was responsible for Valencia’s equaliser.

“They have to perform the relevant tests on Casillas. He’s in pain and when they do the tests we’ll know more about what’s wrong.

“Adae knows we trust him. He played recently and had the bad luck of the suspension. Iker has been injured and he knows he’s young, that he has to advance and that we trust him.”
