Barca loss encourages Demichelis

Barcelona’s first League defeat of the season has Martin Demichelis hopeful that Malaga can eliminate them from the Cup in midweek.

Malaga play host to La Blaugrana this Thursday for the return leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final.

With the score at 2-2, the Argentine defender hopes that Barca are still out of sorts when they travel down to La Rosaleda.

“Thursday’s game is more than important for many reasons. Surely, we will meet with a Barcelona that will try to exert pressure from the first minute, but hopefully we will go out there confident that we can eliminate them,” Demichelis told reporters today.

“As is the way with football, this same weekend Barcelona showed that they are not an invincible team and that even they can lose a two-goal lead. And we have shown that in difficult situations and tough games that we are up for it. In football you never know, they might arrive angry and then it will be difficult to deal with them.

“Hopefully some doubt arises in them, though I do not think so because they are used to setting out to win every two or three days. Being able to eliminate Barcelona would be something with global significance.”

Malaga Coach Manuel Pellegrini heavily criticised La Rosaleda’s playing surface at the weekend, calling it an ‘ice rink’.

“It’s worse than ever. It is more than difficult to walk on. It does not affect just one or two players, about all of us, with rubber studs, aluminium…”
