Emery: Sevilla have the raw material

Unai Emery has been presented to the Press as Sevilla’s new Coach and has expressed his faith in the playing staff’s ability to turn things around.

Emery was brought in to replace Michel Gonzalez on Monday evening and took his first training on Tuesday morning.

He began his presentation today by thanking the club, currently in bottom half of the table, for the opportunity to return to work so soon.

“I want to thank Sevilla for the call and I want us to work and develop our work to establish a style to improve the club,” began the technician, who was sacked in November by Spartak Moscow.

“Thank you for the opportunity. I come here to add points on the board and to try and realise that dream that Sevilla’s fans have of a team they can enjoy to watch.

“Transfers? The raw material is in the team here, we cannot worry about someone important leaving, I am aware that this can happen, but I have been told that the sales will be kept to a minimum.

“I trust this team and the real stuff is here. I have every confidence in the club and the team.”

Emery spent four years at Valencia, successfully guiding them to third place in each of his last three seasons at Mestalla.

“Sevilla have been a direct rival of mine with my previous team and they had many similarities with Valencia.

“I have yet to see, but I presume that this is an aggressive team, both with and without the ball. The formation I intend to use is not as important as the attitude that the players can offer in certain positions.

“The team’s current situation? To give a diagnosis in football is very difficult. I believe it is important to gain the confidence of the group.

“Such confidence can create a connection between all the players and they can give something more.

“It can improve the dynamic and individual players and situations and create a state of trust and harmony in the work, so that the best versions of every player can be reached.

“Despite the situation, the atmosphere inside the club is very positive and I think it will help us pull this off.

The 41-year-old was asked of how talks developed with Sevilla.

“My first thought after Russia was to take a holiday and relax, but always the door is open to not let an opportunity pass. The first communication from the club was on Sunday and then again on Monday. They progressed yesterday and then the talks materialised.”

Emery will now find himself working with Alvaro Negredo, who he was asked to compare with Roberto Soldado at Valencia. The pair have often been in contention at international level for a single spot in the Spain squad.

“It’s like if you ask me if I prefer Mum or Dad. Both are very good. I would rate them both as 9s, as two strikers and two individuals, and we should be pleased to have Negredo. For us, he is the best.”
