Sevilla sack Michel – report

It is being reported that Sevilla have sacked Coach Michel Gonzalez, almost exactly a year after hiring him.

The 49-year-old has, according to a number of outlets in Spain, been removed from his position with immediate effect, following a meeting this evening by the club’s board members.

President Jose Maria del Nido confirmed earlier in the day that he had left ‘the assessment of the sporting decision in the hands of the executive committee’, following the team’s joint-worst first half to a League season during Del Nido’s 10 years at the club.

Michel, who was appointed in place of Marcelino Garcia Toral in early February 2012, had earned just 22 points from the opening 19 games played this season and will now end his tenure at the club with a run of just two League wins from the last 11 played.

Speculation in the afternoon has heavily linked former Valencia boss Unai Emery with the hotseat. Emery’s spell in charge of Spartak Moscow ended prematurely in November, after just a few months in Russia.
