‘Difficult day for us Pericos’

Espanyol defender Joan Capdevilla has apologised to fans for the team’s performance in yesterday’s 4-0 defeat to Barcelona.

Javier Aguirre’s side went into the derby not short on confidence having put together a four match unbeaten run but were savaged at Camp Nou, with all four goals scored within the first half hour.

“You can lose face, but you have to give more,” sighed the veteran fullback in conversation with journalists today. “This is a complicated and difficult day for all us Pericos.

“The primary responsibility lies with us players. After a derby loss you’re always sad, it’s quite hard, and difficult to assimilate. We were not worthy in the first half hour.”

The former Spanish international is now looking forward to a double header against fellow relegation candidates Celta Vigo and Real Mallorca.

“We will play more offensively against Celta, because it is a final. This is the ideal time to exit our decline. We can do better against a direct rival for survival than we did against Barcelona. We have room for manoeuvre, because our rivals face some complicated encounters.”
