Messi, Puyol, Xavi ‘three pillars’

Barcelona spokesman Toni Freixa has expressed the club’s delight in signing Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol to new contracts.

The three were confirmed on Tuesday morning in a single statement as having agreed terms on respective new deals that will be signed in the coming weeks.

Messi has been handed a further two years to June 2018, Xavi also has two more years to take him to June 2016 whilst Puyol was given three more years, also to June 2016.

“The agreements reflect the continuity of the project. Puyol, Messi and Xavi are three fundamental pillars,” enthused Freixa to reporters today.

“It was very necessary to continue to have these major pieces linked to our club. It is a great pleasure for the board to continue a successful project with the renewals of Xavi, Puyol and Messi.

“The three were announced together? It was a coincidence that the three completed talks, but we communicate it today as we could have on any other day, there is no strategy to when we have announced this news.”

Puyol’s extension of three years is the biggest surprise of the three, due to his recent injury issues and the fact that he will be 38 by the end of his final year of this new deal.

“He will play on until he wants to, he is extraordinary and shows us every day that there is no age for him.”
