Caparros: Not the end of an era

Real Mallorca boss Joaquin Caparros admits tomorrow’s meeting with Athletic Bilbao is a must win game.

Mallorca are fourth from bottom, on a ten game winless streak and were thumped 5-0 by Sevilla in the Copa del Rey in midweek. Caparros, formerly in charge of Athletic, is having to deal with constant speculation that his year and a half long spell at the Iberostar Stadium will soon come to an end.

“It’s not the end of an era against Athletic, but we have to win,” the 57-year-old told assembled journalists. “It’s very important to get the three points.

“I see in the city a good disposition towards us, but we have to give arguments to support that against Athletic.”

The Basques are in fairly dire straits theirselves having been eliminated from the Copa by tiny Eibar.

“We’re facing a lot of quality,” Caparros continued. “Athletic have a great Coach and players who are always 100 per cent committed.

“The diagnosis is clear, we’re conceding a lot of goals, and must reduce those numbers so we can take advantage of our chances over 90 minutes.”
