Barcelona back-up ‘keeper Jose Manuel Pinto thinks Lionel Messi’s record breaking is the result of ‘hard work and humility.’
The Argentine forward broke Gerd Muller’s record of goals scored in a calendar year last night, hitting his 85th and 86th in the 2-1 win over Real Betis.
“It would be very hard to sum it up in one word, impossible, but hard work, humility, that is the secret,” stated the shot stopper in a media engagement earlier today.
Messi's own response was typically understated.
“Messi is happy. He’s very quiet, what hasn’t been said about him? We were glad he got the record.”
Pinto then turned to Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash with Cordoba, in which he is likely to play.
“Just because they’re in the Segunda we can’t assume it will be easy. It will be a very even tie, and we must be 100 per cent. We will analyse Cordoba but they have quality players who have played at the top level.”
The 37-year-old was also asked about his future at Camp Nou.
“I live day to day, I’m happy here with my family. I feel fine physically, I work hard daily, and when I have been needed I’ve performed at a high level. I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, but I’ll enjoy today.”
