San Jose sees confident Athletic

Athletic Bilbao defender Mikel San Jose is emboldened by Los Leones 1-0 win at home to Celta Vigo yesterday.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa has admitted that his side’s performance dipped as the game at San Mames progressed , but San Jose’s analysis is much more upbeat.

“It was a hard fought game,” the centre-back said today in a Press conference. “In the first half we were better. During the second, especially in the last 20 minutes, they got a lot of people forward. But it was a victory we deserved and one that will give us confidence.

“We were on a bad streak at home but luckily it went well. We conceded few clear chances and are happy with that aspect. We have opened a small gap between us and the bottom but we have only managed one win and have to do well against Real Mallorca.

“This team has all the reason in the world to be optimistic.”

San Jose also gave his thoughts on Wednesday’s Copa del Rey last 32 second leg against Eibar, a Basque derby originally postponed due to the re-scheduling of their Europa League game in Israel.

“It’s an important match but not an easy one, far from it. Eibar made things difficult in the first leg. At home, with our fans, we have to show superiority. They will come with enthusiasm and play with a great desire. But the Cup is a competition we all love and one we want to stay in.”
