Midfielder Xabi Alonso says Real Madrid must keep believing despite the 11 point gap between them and title rivals Barcelona.

Los Blancos 1-0 defeat to Real Betis, coupled with Barca’s 4-0 rout of Levante, has left Madrid’s hopes hanging by a thread.

“We are in November,” a bullish Alonso told AS ahead of tomorrow’s Copa del Rey meeting with Alcoyano. “There remain many months and a lot can happen.

“We have to keep believing the situation can get better, football is full of surprises. It is clear that we are not favourites but we will fight till the end.”

Alonso was asked why Barca had been able to swat Levante aside with such ease when Real needed a late goal to eke out a 2-1 win at the same ground recently.

“Every game is different. You have to appreciate that, it’s not intentional [on Levante’s part].”

The former Real Sociedad star then discussed the atmosphere in the camp and gave his backing to boss Jose Mourinho.

“When you lose the feeling is different, but you have to keep going. We have to focus on the games, being self-critical and reflective. The club is with the Coach. He’s the best Coach we could have and I have no doubts he wants to be here.”

Next weekend Madrid take on city rivals Atletico, and for the first time since 1999 they go into a derby behind the Rojiblancos on points.

“It’s no coincidence, no wonder that they are where they are. They are a great team with a great Coach who keeps everyone alert.”
