Mel: Betis going for win

Pepe Mel has reiterated that Real Betis are keen to make the most of their improved standing over Sevilla with three points in the derby.

Los Beticos are seven places and four points above Michel Gonzalez’ side going into the weekend’s derby meeting at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and are also unbeaten in the derby from the last four meetings.

For Mel, it is a situation to enjoy but also try and make the most of.

“I am focused on Betis, not on the needs of Sevilla,” explained the Coach today.

“I am after three points and the change in cycle between the clubs is very good, even if it does not add up to anything.

“If we win then we can grow, it is normal as we are high up, but I’m an atypical Betico and I wish that both teams were high up in the table.

“I have prepared a plan to win, we will not focus on one particular player. They generate a lot of football down the right wing because there they have a world champion – they are much more than that, but Jesus Navas does make them better.

“We are not thinking of the merits of a draw. We want to win and hurt them, look for their faults. If during the game we highlight their strengths then it will mean we did not expose their weaknesses.”

Mel also hinted that he may pull a surprise in his starting line-up for the match.
