Athletic form ‘not bad luck’

Carlos Gurpegui believes that Athletic Bilbao are paying greatly for mistakes in their play, but that their form is not a matter of luck.

The Basques may have won at the weekend away to Granada, but fell to another defeat in midweek at home to Lyon, all but eliminating the side from the Europa League.

Heading into the weekend test at home to Sevilla this Sunday, Gurpegui has reflected on the continued low spirits at San Mames.

“And unfortunately here we go again. Marcelo [Bielsa] is very clear on where we are, he is very experienced and will do everything in his power to get us out of this situation,” reflected the midfielder this week.

“There is sadness, though, for having been virtually eliminated from the Europa League. We still feel we are doing enough things well and that what we are doing wrong we are getting punished for greatly, but I do not think it is a matter of luck.

“On Thursday, Lyon were the only team that was going to win it and from the two games against them we have left with two defeats. I do not know why, but it happens again.

“The team has to now regain its mental and physical strength and be aware that on Sunday there is an important match. We’ve lost the last two at home and also, a win would allow us to move up in the League standings.”
