Simeone puts faith in youth

Atletico Madrid Coach Diego Simeone has full confidence in the youngsters he plans to play against Academica tomorrow night.

Atleti are in Portugal looking for their 17th straight win in European competition. Currently three points clear at the top of Europa League Group C, the tournament holders could seal their place in the next round with a draw.

Simeone has decided to field youngsters and fringe players in the three matches to date and intends to continue that approach in Coimbra.

“We have boys and we know how they work,” the former Colchoneros midfielder began at his pre-match Press conference.

“The only thing that can improve them is the amount of minutes you give them. These kids are growing well and hopefully they will meet the expectations we have of them.

“We try not to think about what lies ahead. We always seek to win, not to tie.”

Academica gave Atleti a scare in the reverse fixture, scoring late on in their 2-1 defeat at the Vicente Calderon, and Simeone was impressed by the Primeira Liga outfit.

“They are a tough opponent, fast, and it's an important week for them, they have to play Porto.”

Portuguese defender Silvio was put forward for Press duties in his home nation.

“I like Academica,” he said. “They have speed and good players. They are a team that plays good football.”
