Klopp: We had some luck

Jurgen Klopp admitted that his Borussia Dortmund side felt fortunate to take a draw away from Real Madrid, if also just a little disappointed it wasn’t a win.

The Germans were twice pegged back by the home side to leave with a 2-2 result on Tuesday evening and Klopp first pointed out that fortune did favour his side.

“We’ve had some luck. But if you come here and you are unlucky then you’ll concede eight goals. In that sense, we are happy,” the Coach told reporters afterwards.

“It’s hard to plan a game against Real Madrid in advance. We were clear that we had to absolutely do as much as we did in the reverse game and our plan was not to make mistakes, instead to have the ball. We did this in the first two phases.

“With the changes Madrid made they took more force in the game and we did not react, and that worked in their favour. It was a great atmosphere and I’m sure 10 years from now we will remember this game.”

Klopp reflected on the emotions felt at the end, in seeing three points turn into one with Mesut Ozil’s late equaliser for the home side.

“It would not have surprised me after our victory in Germany as the game was able to decide the group. But the draw is a good result, this is a very difficult group.

“Predominantly I am feeling pride and a little disappointment. We contested for the win right to the end and with Real Madrid that is not easy and we are proud of this result.

“But we leave a little sad that it was a draw at the last minute. We were at our best in this group, but these are two games we can be proud of.”
