Ozil earns Real draw with Dortmund

Mesut Ozil scored a last minute free-kick to give Real Madrid a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund.

Jose Mourinho named a near full-strength side for the visit of the Bundesliga champions, and proved their worth by getting off to a spectacularly bright start. Los Blancos were forcing the German side to retreat into their own half, and with Xabi Alonso at the base of midfield, were going from defence to attack in the blink of an eye.

Jurgen Klopp's men though, were not downheartened, and had the best effort in the opening exchanges. A quick break from Die Borussen saw Marcel Schmelzer bare down on goal, but the full-back rushed his effort which struck the post.

The visiting team were gradually imposing themselves on the match, but it was Real who should have opened the scoring on 21 minutes. A cross from Gonzalo Higuain went to the head of Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Portuguese international could only flick his effort wide.

That missed chance came back to haunt the home team, as Dortmund took the lead seven minutes later. A flicked header from Robert Lewandowski found Reus, who struck it from outside the area and into the top right-hand corner.

However, within six minutes the Bernabeu club were back on level terms. A cross from Ozil on the left found Pepe, who rose above his marker and powered his effort past Roman Weidenfeller.

Right on the stroke of half-time though, a Kevin Grosskreutz pass found Mario Gotze, who was tackled by Arbeloa, but inadvertently poked it past Iker Casillas from inside the area, to give Dortmund a deserved lead.

Just after the re-start, Jose Maria Callejon had a goal correctly disallowed for offside, but that only seemed to spur Los Merengues on.

They began to reassert their dominance, but just couldn’t find a way through the black-and-yellow defence.

The pressure was relentless from Mourinho’s men as first Ronaldo then Di Maria forced good saves from the goalkeeper, but it wasn’t enough for an equaliser.

With just a minute left however, that goal did come. An Ozil free-kick from 25 yards out crept over the wall and into the back of the net.
