Playing again not Abidal’s priority

Defender Eric Abidal is more interested in returning to health than returning to Barcelona's first team.

The Frenchman is recovering from a liver transplant last April, his second major health scare during his time with the Catalan club.

“My goal is not to play again,” the 33-year-old left back told TV channel France 2. “For me now, the most important thing is to have good health.

“There are some things that endure, and others that don't. My priority is my family and my health.”

Abidal then reflected on his initial diagnosis in 2011, and the support he has received.

“My life changed when I had the surgery two years ago. I've looked at life differently since then. I have different priorities.

“I realise that during my illness there were many people behind me, some that I know and some that I don't. I appreciate all of their efforts. It's a gift that will mark me for life.”

Abidal could return to action in December, but is 'going step by step.'
