Michel unhappy despite Copa win

Sevilla boss Michel declared himself unhappy with his team’s performance in the 3-1 first leg Copa del Rey victory over Espanyol.

Two late goals from Cala and Alvaro Negredo, the second a stoppage time penalty, gave the Andalusians a two-goal advantage for the return leg, but it was not enough to satisfy a clearly dissatisfied Michel.

“We didn’t have enough of the ball, which is what makes us a better side,” he told a post-match Press conference. “It wasn’t because they managed to get it off us but because we gave it to them.

“It was strange we lost it so much and we couldn’t impose our authority on the game. If the result was good it is because we recovered after conceding the equalising goal.

“We were not all bad but we didn’t play as we should do in order to win games.”

In contrast, he praised the performance of his defenders, who he believed were the reason Los Rojiblancos emerged victorious.

“Espanyol made one-and-a-half chances and scored a goal so I can’t complain about the defence. The centre-backs were great. Fernando Navarro had a tremendous game and Cicinho was also reliable.

“A 3-1 win over a Primera team in the Cup is always good but we are not over-confident as strange things can happen, but bear in mind we can also give a good performance in the return,” he warned.
