Ballon d’Or shortlist due tomorrow

The 23 nominees for the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or will be announced on Monday, with the voting system confirmed as staying the same.

There was speculation that alongside the list of nominations to recognise the best player in the world being published on Monday, that the rules for who is allowed to vote for who may have changed again.

However, France Football have confirmed that the voting system will remain the same. The current format sees top three votes taken from journalists around the world and the captain and Coach from each international team, and they are allowed to vote for players from their own country.

Subsequently, reports that Iker Casillas’ reported preferred vote for best Coach as Vicente del Bosque and for Sergio Ramos and Xavi Hernandez as part of his top three is an eligible selection.

Lionel Messi has won the last three editions of the best player award, equalling Michel Platini’s record in doing so. He is expected to face competition from Andres Iniesta, Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas and Xavi Hernandez for the 2012 prize.
