Zaragoza shelve Sevilla

Real Zaragoza collected a second successive win on Sunday lunchtime, defeating a disappointing Sevilla 2-1 at home.

The hosts had the better of the opening half and deservedly went in at the break ahead by two goals. Helder Postiga’s low shot from the middle of the box found the bottom corner 10 minutes before half-time to fully capitalise on Sevilla’s lost possession. That was then followed by Cristian Sapunaru’s header from a free-kick, which came just on 45.

The second half saw Zaragoza continue to frustrate their Andalucian opponents and following a couple of tough challenges from both sides, tempers threatened to boil over.

With 20 minutes left, Sevilla pulled one back through Gary Medel’s half-volley that took a huge deflection off Glenn Loovens to beat ‘keeper Roberto, who had saved well in the build-up from a Baba header.

The home side had a couple of penalty appeals turned down in the final 15 of the game, the first of which saw Victor Rodriguez booked for simulation.

At the other end, Baba wasted a chance for the visitors when clean through on goal, but it was an otherwise disappointing finish from Michel Gonzalez’ men, who fell to a third defeat of the season.
