Gerard Pique has expressed his surprise in not seeing Carles Puyol handed the Prince of Asturias award for Sport alongside Xavi Hernandez and Iker Casillas.
Puyol’s Barcelona teammate Xavi and the Real Madrid captain Casillas were announced as winners of the award in September and upon receiving it yesterday, reflected that their work in uniting the players of Barca and Real was perhaps the reason why.
Following on from Xavi’s mention of Puyol as also being involved in those talks, his centre-back partner Pique has questioned why the Barca captain wasn’t also handed the award.
“I sincerely cannot understand why Carles Puyol is not collecting the Principe de Asturias prize with Iker and Xavi,” commented the defender on his Twitter account yesterday.
“Just like Xavi and Iker, Puyol represents all these years of success that the national side has had. They were the first players who started this generation.”
