Simeone: Statistics don’t concern me

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone said his team’s 21-game unbeaten streak does not particularly concern him.

The Argentine saw his side rack up a 16th straight win in Europe with a 2-1 win over Academica Coimbra at the Vicente Calderon, to make it 21 games without defeat in all competitions.

“Besides the victory the best thing about the game was the performances of Silvio [Pereira], Cata [Diaz], [Sergio] Asenjo, Emre [Belozoglu], Tiago [Mendes], [Jorge] Pulido…

“Statistics are for the history books and journalists. We live for tomorrow and tomorrow is Osasuna,” he told a Press conference.

Asked about his policy of rotating players for Europa League games, Simeone took a pragmatic view.

“We look to be competitive. The word rotation is more for the Press. Adrian [Lopez], Gabi and Koke all played. I try to find the most competitive team.”

The officials in the Academica game word black shorts and socks, the same as the Portuguese side, and it was something that Simeone said had been noted.

“We’ve written to UEFA about it so I suppose they will try to find a solution. We also hope they can resolve the matter in La Liga.

“Referees always look at what the goalkeeper is wearing. It would be good if they could also look at themselves,” he concluded.
