De Marcos: Final minutes cost Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos felt the final few minutes cost his team in their 2-1 Europa League defeat to Lyon.

The Basques went down to a last-gasp Jimmy Briand goal at the Stade de Berland to leave them bottom of Group I, with De Marcos left to lament the unhappy ending to the game for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

“We played a complete game but the last few minutes cost us the match. We have now reached the stage where we need to finish off moves, but we are on the brink of getting better results,” the 23-year-old told a Press conference.

Despite Los Leones’ recent run of poor results De Marcos does, however, see the future with optimism.

“The negative thing has been our results but on the positive side we are improving. At Mestalla, for example, we played really well until the sending off [of Ander Herrera].”

On Bilbao’s future in the Europa League, a competition they reached the final of last season, he refuses to give up but acknowledged it is going to be very difficult.

“It all depends on us winning our three remaining games. We still have a chance so we are going to go for it,” he added defiantly.
