Mallorca hit with €21m lawsuit

Mallorca are facing a legal action against them of €21m from a group of clubs that claim they unlawfully broke a media rights contract this summer.

The islanders signed over broadcasting rights for their games to Prisa TV in August, covering the next three seasons, after breaking from rivals Mediapro.

At the time, the club cited one contributing factor as to the decision as being the National Competition Committee’s ruling that Mediapro’s original agreement with them was invalid for the contract being signed for more than three years.

However, the G-30 have confirmed today that they voted earlier this month in favour of taking action against Mallorca for unlawfully breaking agreements signed with Mediapro and their group. A lawsuit has now been filed with the Spanish Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The G-30 group are a collection of clubs, including now five La Liga teams – Levante, Rayo Vallecano, Granada, Malaga and Real Valladolid – and 16 from the lower Leagues, that in 2010 agreed to negotiate the sale of their broadcast rights to Mediapro as a collective.

Mallorca were set to receive €16m in broadcast revenue had they stayed with G-30 and with Mediapro, whilst their Prisa TV contract sees them earn €21m.
