Barca and Espanyol back Catalan team

Barcelona and Espanyol are among clubs in Catalonia who have agreed to work towards the nationalisation of Catalan teams.

Plans have now been set out in collaboration with the Plataforma Proseleccions Catalanes together with clubs from La Segunda and Segunda Barcelona, with the exception of L’Hospitalet.

An agreement was signed on Monday and President of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, praised the sporting bodies involved for their sense of national pride, claiming that ‘what we are aiming for is normality’.

Mas added that the Catalonia team would be able to compete internationally and believes there is enough backing for it from within the autonomous community, although he stressed that the internationalisation of Catalonia in sport ‘was no cause for alarm’.

Barcelona President Sandro Rosell was present at the signing along with Espanyol President Ramon Condal, along with their respective counterparts from Girona and Badalona, Joaquim Boadas and Miguel Angel Sanchez.

A number of Segunda B clubs were also represented, including Llagostera, Lleida, Esportiu Terraferma, AE Prat, Reus Esportiu, Sant Andreu and Gimnastic de Tarragona.
